During the first lockdown I was extremely bored and stuck at home so I got the idea to test out the at home laser removal. I ordered the Philips Lumea Advanced IPL system in August 2020 and I’ve been using it for 5 months now. Here is my experience.
IPL stands for intense pulsed light technology. Home IPL hair removal devices apply very gentle pulses of light to the hair root. This makes the hair go into its resting phase: the hair you have falls out, and gradually your body grows less hair in that area.
The IPL hair removal devices can be used only by specific hair colors and specific skin tones. They work well on dark blonde, brown, and black hair, and most skin shades apart from very dark tones.
You shouldn’t use it over beauty spots, tattoos, irritated skin, burns or other open injuries.
In short – no. It’s a painless at home removal device. You feel a warm, tingly sensation with each pulse, but it doesn’t hurt.
It’s not the quickest process, but I normally put on a movie or watch some Youtube videos while I do it. Also I must note that the device is not completely quiet, it makes a sound similar to a hairdryer, just a bit quieter.
It takes me about 10-15 minutes to do the lower half of my leg, so about 30 minutes for both lower parts. If your upper leg hair is dark enough for the IPL to work, it will take you about 15 minutes for each leg.
For the underarms – that’s quite fast, only 2 or 3 minutes each.
For the bikini area – up to 5 minutes.
First you have to shave. I recommend shaving in the morning of the treatment or the evening of the day before, just so your skin is not as sensitive. Before the first use, test it out on a small area of your legs, underarms and bikini and look out for any allergic reactions.
After you’ve shaved, go ahead and select the appropriate level for your hair color and skin tone (everything is listed in the instructions). Start the treatment by pressing the device straight onto your skin at a 90 degree angle. Press the button to release the light pulse and wait for a few seconds. It’s important to remember which areas you already went through so for the first few sessions I recommend you to mark it with a white pencil or eyeshadow. I like to go around my leg and move up.
After I’ve finished I clean the device and moisturize my skin.
According to the Philips Lumea Advanced user guide you need 4 initial sessions that stop your hair growth. You do these sessions once every 2 weeks and the rest of the sessions are touch ups every 4 weeks.
In my experience, you need at least 6 sessions for hairless legs. I did the first 4 sessions, took a 4 week break and then did 2 more every 2 weeks. Now I only do touch ups every 4 weeks.
The results are not visible after the first session. It took me 3 sessions to notice a big enough difference in hair growth.
First I noticed my hair stopped growing in certain spots so I had bald patches over my legs and bikini area. I continued with the sessions and I’m finally satisfied after the 6th one. My hair still grows back in some spots, but it’s really not that visible so it doesn’t bother me. But I still do touch up sessions every 4 weeks and will continue to do so.
The short answer – no.
Your hair will continue to grow back as IPL devices aren’t as powerful as professional cosmetic lasers. You will have to do touch up sessions every 4 weeks or so if you want to continue being hair free throughout the whole year. It’s a cheap solution for hairless legs but it takes more effort than the salon treatments.
In my opinion – yes. Even though it took a while to see the results it turned out to be a great investment. I only shave every 2-3 weeks or before every touch up session and I honestly forget about my leg hair because it’s almost invisible even when it grows out. I will see how well this will work in the summer as I have a few touch up sessions before that, but for now I’m satisfied.
I purchased it in August and started using it immediately. My first thought was – wow this device is louder than I expected. It’s not a big minus, just a bit annoying when you’re trying to watch series at the same time.
It took me a few sessions to figure out the quickest way to do my legs and also to remember which area I already went through and which I might’ve missed.
It took 3 sessions to notice a difference in hair growth. I started noticing a few bald patches on my legs and my bikini area that got bigger and bigger with every session.
I’m 6 sessions in now and my hair is still not completely hair free, but it takes much longer for the hair to grow and even when it does, it only grows back in really small areas.
I will continue with the touch up sessions every 4 weeks and hopefully I’ll be hairfree by summer!
I’m generally satisfied with this purchase. It saved me thousands of euros of salon laser treatments and even though my legs are not completely hairfree it still takes less time to shave and it’s less noticable.
I noticed the biggest difference on my legs. It didn’t work as well on my bikini area, even though the hair is thinner and sparser. The least of a difference was on my underarms for some reason – almost no difference at all.
Overall this device is worth it! You get easy at home treatments for around 260 eur instead of thousands spent at the salons.
