Lately I’ve been learning how to slow down and truly experience every little moment. Life is so precious and so many moments pass us by without us even noticing. It’s been nearly 2 years since covid hit. Last year, it forced us to slow down, retreat into our homes, and deal with everything we’ve been working so hard to ignore. Facing our deepest thoughts, focusing more on self-care, starting new hobbies, reading more and diving deep into our inner selves instead of rushing around, even if just for a few weeks, has made such a big difference for so many of us.

I wanted to continue the self care and slowing down the time even now, that the life has returned back to the semi-normality. Fall is such a “hygge” time and for this post, I wanted to prepare some ideas on how to experience the simple moments of life with the help of this danish philosophy.

What is hygge?

Hygge is a danish word that doesn’t have a literal translation, but can be described as feelings of intimacy, cosiness and contentment. The philosophy behind hygge is to create feelings of happiness, wellbeing and friendliness within everyday life. It’s all about finding the deeper meaning among seemingly mundane, everyday moments and be truly present in the moment.

How to create the ideal hygge environment?

Even though the philosophy of hygge is to enjoy the simple everyday moments, you can create a cozy, comforting environment in your home, in order to experience hygge even better.

Step 1 – Activate the senses

The most effective and the fastest way to activate our emotions is to stimulate the senses. You can easily do this by lighting some scented candles and create a cozy, nostalgic atmosphere.

My favorite hygge candles are definitely Woodwick candles. Not only do they smell absolutely amazing, but they also make a wonderful, crackling sound, when they’re lit. You get to experience the lovely smell and also feel like you’ve got yourself a mini fireplace with the sounds of the crackling fire.

Step 2 – Light a fire

How to instantly feel cozy? Make yourself warm. Light a fireplace, turn on the thermostat, wear cozy pyjamas and fuzzy socks.

Step 3 – Make your home cozy & comfy

Decorate your home with cozy blankets, pastel colors and snuggle yourself on the couch with your favorite book in your hands.

Step 4 – Bring the nature in

Add some plants to your home decor and open the windows when it’s raining. Listening to the sound of the rain is so therapeutic, as well as the smell of the wet soil making its way into your home.

Step 5 – Spend quality time at home

In the cold, winter months, when you can’t really do much outside you can invite your family and friends for fun, cozy evenings to enjoy the hygge together. Play some games, cook dinner, enjoy a glass of wine or a cup of pumpkin spice latte. It’s all about creating the cozy, happy atmosphere in your home.
